The 118th U.S. Open at Shinnecock has not been without its share of drama. Drama that came to a head on Saturday, after players began to lose grips with the courses ‘unplayable’ conditions.
Not a single player was able to break par on their round in the afternoon – a result the USGA has admitted and accepted responsibility for.
Aside from the near impossible course setup, Dustin Johnson was able to get a four-stroke lead after shooting 7- over 77, to tie with Brooks Koepka, Tony Finau and Daniel Berger at 3 over heading into the final round.
Shadowed by 15 major players who are at or within four strokes of the lead, it’s entirely likely that we’ll be seeing a winner over par for the first time since the 2013 U.S Open at Merion, when Justin Rose won at 1 over.
